Accurate Miniatures 1/48th scale Il-2 single seater
"White 82 - Valerij Chkalov"
Model built between December 2008 & October 2012
All details of this build can be found
here. Details of the kit and accessories can be found here. The scheme is from the AML
decal sheet 48 026 "Ilyushin Il-2 Shturmovik single-seater". The fuselage
inscription reads "Valerij Chkalov", the name of a famous Soviet test
pilot who was killed testing the Polikarpov I-180 fighter on December 15th
1938. The aircraft carries a small tactical number, White 82, along with a
white identification strip on the rudder. The rear of this aircraft is
seen pictured on page 15 of Squadron/Signals Publication "Il-2 Stormovik
In Action" ISBN 0-89747-341-8 (1995). This is a machine belived to have
fought in Estonia in 1944.
This model is displayed on a base of hard-wood with a top of air-drying
clay shaped to represent the wooden logs used as planks to create
temporary runways on the eastern front during the Great Patriotic War. I
could find no visual reference to these planked runways and have only read
descriptions. So this was guesswork - but it looks reasonable. Grass tufts
are by Joefix. CMK bombs. Crates/oil barrels from EBay.
